The Hong Kong Observatory and the China Meteorological Administration jointly organised a workshop on “Artificial Intelligence Application in Weather Forecasting”
9 December 2025
The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) jointly organised an international workshop for the first time under the Voluntary Cooperation Programme (VCP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) from 1 to 5 December 2025. This workshop, with the theme of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Application in Weather Forecasting”, took place at the World Meteorological Centre (Beijing) Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Branch in Guangzhou. It also marked the second international training activity since the establishment of the Meteorological Training Centre for Belt and Road Countries in Hong Kong last year.
The five-day workshop covered the latest developments in AI weather forecasting models, the applications of data-driven modelling and the AI techniques in nowcasting etc. Ms. Chang Yue, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the CMA, introduced China’s MAZU, a Joint Action for Early Warnings for All. Other speakers included Dr. Tian Fuyou, Dr. Yang Shunan, Mr. Gong Yu, and Ms. Zhou Xiaomin from the CMA, as well as Mr. Wong Wai-kin, Mr. He Yuheng and Mr. Or Ming-keung from the HKO. In addition to lectures, the workshop featured interactive sharing sessions. Participants also visited the Guangdong Meteorological Service to learn about its dissemination of weather warning messages.
The workshop attracted an overwhelming response with around 70 participants from more than 30 countries and territories attending either in person or online, with a majority of participants from the Belt and Road (B&R) regions. Participants highly praised the workshop, stating that the knowledge gained from the workshop would further facilitate their application of AI in weather forecasting. Looking forward, the HKO and the CMA will continue to join hands to develop training activities, with the aim to enhance the capacities of meteorological personnel from B&R regions, as well as facilitate meteorological cooperation and development.

Ms. Chang Yue, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation of the CMA, conducted lecture for the workshop.
