The Observatory hosted the 10th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Seminar on Earthquake Science and Technology
24 November 2025
The Hong Kong Observatory hosted the 10th Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Seminar on Earthquake Science and Technology on 13-14 November 2025 with around 40 experts from 10 organisations1 participated. The Observatory’s Director, Dr Chan Pak-wai, also held a high-level meeting with the new Director of the Guangdong Earthquake Agency (GEA), Dr Yang Zhenyu, on the day before the seminar.
The meeting between HKO and GEA reviewed the progress of cooperation items like the new network of earthquake intensity metres and dedicated terminals for quick earthquake messages in Hong Kong, as well as discussed the future cooperation projects to facilitate resources planning in respect of further enhancement of earthquake monitoring and risk assessment, particularly for the Littoral Fault Zone (LFS) and the Slope Fault Zone (SFZ) over the northern part of the South China Sea, strengthening earthquake information services and disaster prevention capabilities for the Greater Bay Area.
This year’s seminar yielded fruitful results. There were 20 technical reports with a wide range of topics including the structure and seismic hazards of LFZ and SFZ and the corresponding potential tsunami risk impacting the South China coast, the application of artificial intelligence in seismic monitoring, high-resolution seismicity and 3D underground structure analysis, as well as IoT-based measurements for seismic impact assessment. The Observatory presented four reports, namely the latest development of the locally felt earthquake monitoring network and system, re-analysis of some historical cases of local earthquakes, exploration of an empirical ground motion prediction model and development of the Pacific Tsunami Modelling System for Hong Kong.
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Earthquake Science and Technology Seminar was first organised in Hong Kong in 2004. It is then held alternately every two years by GEA, HKO and SMG. The next seminar will be held in Macao in 2027.
