Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sea Level Center Newly Set Up
23 April 2025
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GD-HK-MC GBA) Sea Level Centre was jointly set up by the National Marine Data and Information Service (NMDIS), the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) on 16 April 2025. Dr Chan Pak-wai, Director of the HKO, and Ms Lam Ching-chi, Senior Scientific Officer, attended the Unveiling Ceremony of the Sea Level Centre and discussion meeting held in Tianjin, China. The Marine Early Warning and Monitoring Department and the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) also sent senior personnel from Beijing to attend the event to signify the importance of the GD-HK-MC GBA Sea Level Centre.
At the meeting, the NMDIS, HKO and SMG exchanged views on the key work directions, mechanisms and target outcomes of the Sea Level Centre. Against the backdrop of intensifying climate change, sea levels continue to rise, increased intensity of tropical cyclones will increase the risk of storm surges, and extreme sea level events will become more frequent. With the setup of the GD-HK-MC GBA Sea Level Centre, it promotes technological innovation and cooperative research on sea level rise and alert of related hazard risks, and develops early warning products for extreme sea level events by combining with artificial intelligence techniques. Staff exchanges in scientific research and capacity building will be conducted to cultivate innovative talents with an international perspective, deepen regional cooperation, as well as enhance information and data sharing and the ability to respond to climate change in marine areas, contributing to the sustainable development of the GD-HK-MC GBA.
