Members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Hong Kong Branch) visited the Observatory

10 December 2024

More than 20 members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Hong Kong Branch (IMechE-HK) paid a technical visit to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) on 7 December 2024. The Observatory’s Scientific Officers conducted technical talks on how to monitor earthquakes and tsunamis in real-time, and explained their causes and impacts, as well as tsunami prediction techniques. A guided tour to the Seismograph Cellar and the Backup South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Center (Hong Kong) located at the Headquarters was conducted for the participants.

The participating members were actively engaged in the technical visit and Q&A section, raising technical questions ranging from the differentiation of tsunami waves from the other sea waves to the calculation of earthquake intensity. This event provided an interactive communication platform for the engineering community. The Observatory will continue to grasp the opportunity of promoting knowledge about earthquakes and tsunamis, and strive to enhance public awareness of disaster prevention in this regard.
