The Observatory participated in United Nations Climate Change Conference

Colleagues of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), as members of the Chinese delegation, attended the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. During the event, the Environment and Ecology Bureau (EEB) and the Observatory organised a side event titled “Climate Action: From Climate Science to New Energy Development Opportunities” on 13 November. Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Director-General of the National Climate Centre of Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA), officials of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, as well as collaboration partners of the “Belt and Road” region were invited to share insights on climate science and explore opportunities including development of new energy and carbon footprint management solutions. The event also publicized Mainland China and HKSAR’s climate policies and actions and support our countries’ efforts in combating climate change.

Ms Song Man-kuen, Sandy, Assistant Director of HKO introduced to the guests the climate services provided by the Observatory and how the public and the stakeholders’ adaptability to climate change could be enhanced. Moreover, during the COP29, the Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, and Ms Sandy Song, Assistant Director of HKO and other HKSARG officials also had a meeting with Professor Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of WMO, and exchanged views on United Nation’s “Early Warnings for All” initiatives and the scientific work on climate change.

The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan (third right), the Commissioner for Climate Change, Mr Wong Chuen-fai (second right), Assistant Director of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Mr Lee Hok-yin (first left), and Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Ms Song Man-kuen, Sandy (first right), had a bilateral meeting with the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Professor Celeste Saulo (third left), and the Director of the Climate Services Branch, Professor Christopher Hewitt (second left) in Baku, to exchange views on issues such as strengthening international cooperation in response to extreme weather and United Nation’s “Early Warning for All” initiative.
