Public Course on Weather Observation Resumed with Enthusiastic Response

14 November 2023

The Public Course on Weather Observation was organised by the Hong Kong Observatory successfully on 28 October and 4 November. The course had been suspended over the past few years due to the pandemic. With the resumption of the course by the Observatory this year, the response from the public was very enthusiastic. The number of applications was close to 2,000. During the two half-day lessons, around 100 participants gained an understanding of the basic weather observation techniques and methods, observation and classification of clouds, weather phenomena and hazards, interpretation of weather charts and weather proverbs, applications of weather observation in weather forecasting, the use and sharing of weather information, as well as the working principles of meteorological equipment, etc. They could even have practical experience in the process of taking weather observations and coding weather reports.

The participants opined that the course could deepen their weather knowledge, and expressed appreciation for the rich content of the course and professional presentations of instructors. After completing the course, they also learned to share weather reports via "My Weather Observation" on the "My Observatory" mobile app, and weather related photos or videos in the Facebook group of the Community Weather Observing Scheme.

Those who were unable to participate in the course are welcome to watch the series of Online Videos on Weather Observation produced by the Observatory to enhance their knowledge.
