"Cool Met Stuff" of the Hong Kong Observatory won the 2023 "Kelei Cup"

6 November 2023

The Cool Met Stuff episode "Carbon Multiverse" and "Flooding can occur even during Amber rainstorms (Part 1 and 2)" produced by the Hong Kong Observatory won the third prize in the short video category and the professional category of the 2023 China Science Film and Video "Kelei Cup" respectively. The "Kelei Cup" is known as the highest award for science film and video in China. This award recognizes the Observatory’s efforts in promoting science education.

The award-winning video "Carbon Multiverse" uses the popular movie theme – "multiverse" to remind everyone that the future climate of the earth is similar to a multiverse and will be affected by every choice we make today in terms of our daily living, such as clothing, food, accommodation and transportation. Hopefully everyone will follow the protagonist of the video to strive to reverse the fate of the earth by taking action to reduce carbon emissions and save our future together. The episode "Flooding can occur even during Amber rainstorms (Part 1 and 2)" rebuts the myth related to the rainstorm warning signals via simple and laymen terms, using the boiling bubbles inside a kettle as an analogy for illustrating the challenges of forecasting rainstorms.

In the context of climate change, extreme weather events have become more frequent. The Observatory will continue to promote science education, so as to enhance public’s understanding on the impact of climate change, improve disaster prevention capabilities and strengthen the public's awareness of personal safety under inclement weather.
