Hong Kong Observatory and China Meteorological Administration further expand scope of “Arrangement in Long-term Co-operation in Meteorological Science and Technology”

Dr Chen Zhenlin, Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) led a delegation to visit the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) in mid-September 2023 to deepen meteorological cooperation.
Dr Chen and Dr Chan Pak-wai, Director of the HKO, signed an updated “Arrangement in Long-term Co-operation in Meteorological Science and Technology”1 at HKO Headquarters on 13 September to further expand its scope to cover the Belt and Road initiatives and to enhance Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area cooperation. Both parties also attended the ceremony of the exchange of co-operation agreement at the Eighth Belt and Road Summit.
Dr Chan chaired the high-level management meeting with CMA on 13 September. He warmly welcomed the visit of CMA’s delegation led by Dr Chen and expressed sincere gratitude for the strong support of CMA in various areas such as meteorological data exchange, scientific research and training of HKO staff. During the meeting, both parties had an in-depth discussion on future cooperation items, including meteorological data exchange, mutual visit and training, satellite observations as well as international and regional meteorological cooperation to promote high-quality meteorological development.
1 HKO and CMA first signed a memorandum of understanding on long term co-operation on meteorological science and technology in 1996. It was expanded in 2001 to cover co-operation on meteorological observations and climate services.
