Hong Kong Observatory Delegation Visited Partner Authorities in Guangzhou

Dr PW Chan, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), led a delegation of three representatives to Guangzhou on 15 August 2023 for maintaining close ties and enhancing cooperation with the Observatory’s counterparts in aviation, earthquake and marine meteorology, namely the Middle South Regional Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Guangdong Earthquake Agency (GEA) and the South China Sea Bureau (SCSB) of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).
The HKO delegation made fruitful exchanges with ATMB/CAAC on the development of observation network and seamless forecasting tools, as well as capacity building of aviation meteorological personnel in support of air traffic management. Besides, cooperation plan with GEA on earthquake information service enhancement taking advantage of the rapid estimation of earthquake intensity based on the dense seismic network in Mainland China, and that with SCSB/MNR on enhancement of marine observations over the South China Sea and related research studies were discussed. New collaboration areas were explored during the visit to promote further regional cooperation, contributing especially to the safety and well-being of people in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
It was Dr PW Chan’s first visit to Guangzhou since he took up the position of the Director of the HKO in March 2023. Accompanying Dr Chan to Guangzhou were Mr ST Chan, Assistant Director and Ms CC Lam, Senior Scientific Officer of the Observatory.
