Online Training Workshop Organised for Enhancing Regional Aviation Weather Services

The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) organised an online SIGMET Coordination Training Workshop on 15 and 16 June 2022 for promoting exchanges among the aviation forecasters on coordinated issuance of the significant weather information (SIGMET) concerning weather hazardous to aircraft operation.

Experts from Meteorological Watch Offices (MWOs) in the Asia Pacific Region were invited to conduct sharing on various aviation hazardous weather and SIGMET issuance on the first day of workshop. They included Ms Chris KEARNEY from Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Mr CHEN Xin Tao from Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), Mr CHAN Ngo Hin from HKO, Ms Meiske Caesaria SOEMARNO from Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) and Mr GOH Wee Poh from Meteorological Services Singapore (MSS). Mr Peter DUNDA from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) also delivered a talk on the SIGMET service from a regional perspective. On the second day, training and hands-on sessions on the HKO Regional SIGMET Coordination Platform were conducted by Ms Christy LEUNG and Dr Danice NG, Scientific Officers of HKO. Discussion was also made to promote further collaboration among the MWOs.

The workshop was attended by close to 100 participants from 20 States/Administrations in the region. The participants commended the workshop for the high quality information and valuable learnings via the experience-sharing sessions, and indicated that the workshop would improve on their job performance and efficiency.
