Hong Kong Observatory participated in the official opening ceremony of the South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Centre

Mr Mok Hing-yim, Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory attended the opening ceremony of the full operation of the “South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Centre” of the Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO) operated by the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Centre in Beijing on 5 November 2019.
For many years, the Observatory has been actively participating and promoting the establishment of the “South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Centre”. Mr Mok and his colleague, Mr Chan Sai-tick, have successively served as the Chair of the Regional Working Group on Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System in the South China Sea of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (PTWS) of IOC-UNESCO since 2013 to promote and coordinate the related work.
As an integral component of PTWS, the “South China Sea Tsunami Advisory Centre” provides round the clock tsunami monitoring and advisory services for the nine countries around the South China Sea, namely, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
