Hong Kong Observatory Delegation Visited Beijing to Discuss Collaboration

21 January 2020

A three-member delegation led by the Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Shun Chi-ming, visited Beijing on 15-16 January 2020. During the brief two-day journey, the delegation visited three national authorities that have working relationship with the Observatory, viz the Ministry of Natural Resources, the China Meteorological Administration and the China Earthquake Administration, to review ongoing co-operation projects and discuss future collaboration. All parties agreed to work together to meet the challenges brought by extreme weather, marine hazards, earthquakes and tsunamis, and climate change, and to promote greater international and regional co-operation, especially in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to make active contributions to disaster prevention and reduction.

The delegation also took the opportunity to visit the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Centre of the Ministry of Natural Resources and the China Earthquake Network Centre of the China Earthquake Administration to learn about the operations and latest developments of the two centres.

The Observatory signed the “Arrangement in Long-term Co-operation in Meteorological Science and Technology” with the China Meteorological Administration in 1996, the “Co-operation Arrangement in Seismological Science and Technology” with the China Earthquake Administration in 2000, and the "Ocean Science and Technology Co-operation Agreement" with the State Oceanic Administration in 2007 (the Administration was integrated into the Ministry of Natural Resources in 2018). The visit was arranged for the high-level meetings conducted in accordance with these co-operation arrangements/agreements.
