Hong Kong Observatory - "Weather Icon Design Contest"
(21 February 2006)

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its Internet website, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) launches a graphic design contest for weather icons today. Members of the public are invited to participate by sending in new creative designs of weather icons for use in web pages.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage participation so that the wisdom of the community could be incorporated in the HKO website and hence the weather information would be communicated to the public effectively.

Winning weather icon designs may be adopted for use on the HKO weather website.

HKO established its Internet website in 1996. It was among the first few government departments that made use of the Internet to deliver service to the public. The Internet has proved to be the most cost effective means of disseminating large quantity of constantly evolving weather information to a large number of individual users. Over the past 10 years, the average monthly visiting rate of the HKO website has increased more than 1000-fold. The latest figure is around 50 million page hits a month.
