Abstract :

The "Hong Kong Observatory Almanac 2017" is now on sale.

The Almanac is bilingual (English and Chinese) and packed with information tabulated by month, including the traditional Chinese calendar, solar terms and moon phases, as well as the times of daily sunrise, sun transit, sunset, moonrise, moon transit, moonset and high and low tides. The times of meridian passage and the rising and setting of the sun and planets are graphically illustrated. Also included in the publication are a detailed Sun Path Diagram, star maps of the four quarters of the year, duration of twilight, details of solar and lunar eclipses, background information on calendars and determination of apparent solar time, as well as observation of meteor streams and planetary phenomena.

Tide Tables for Hong Kong

Abstract :

The tide tables list the predicted heights and times of daily high and low waters at 14 locations in Hong Kong, namely Chek Lap Kok, Cheung Chau, Chi Ma Wan, Ko Lau Wan, Kwai Chung, Lok On Pai, Ma Wan, Quarry Bay, Shek Pik, Tai Miu Wan, Tai O, Tai Po Kau, Tsim Bei Tsui and Waglan Island. The monthly highest and lowest predicted heights are highlighted in red. Phases of the moon are also given.

The bilingual publication is a useful reference for engineers, shipping companies, wharf and container terminal operators, yachtsmen, and fishing and water sports enthusiasts.

"Weathering the Storms", a collection of essays to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Hong Kong Observatory, is now on sale.

The book comprises 43 Chinese and English articles written by serving and retired staff of the observatory, including four directors of different generations. Through the authors' real-life stories, and more than 100 precious pictures, the evolution of the observatory and Hong Kong society over the decades is vividly revealed. The book is highly recommended for those interested in weather as well as the history of the observatory.
