Weather situation at Kai Tak during the helicopter accident on 1 May 2009

Based on available information, the helicopter accident at Kai Tak today (1 May 2009) occurred at around 11:09 a.m. At that time, Hong Kong Observatory's anemometer at the southeast end of the ex-Kai Tak runway recorded a 10-minute mean wind speed of about 31 kilometres per hour, indicating fresh winds. The maximum gust was about 44 kilometres per hour, and the wind direction was from the east-southeast. The weather over the Victoria Harbour at that time was fine with visibility of over 10 kilometres.
