HKO launches real-time weather photos at Sai Wan Ho
(20 December 2013)

The Hong Kong Observatory has enhanced its regional weather information service by adding real-time weather photos at Sai Wan Ho to its website starting from today (20 December).

The new camera, located at the Sai Wan Ho Marine Police Regional Headquarters, overlooks areas near Lei Yue Mun. Weather photos taken by the camera help monitor weather conditions such as sea fog over the eastern part of the Victoria Harbour, Lei Yue Mun and the surrounding areas. Together with the visibility data measured at Sai Wan Ho, the public can better grasp weather changes over these regions.

The Senior Marine Officer of the Marine Department, Mr Wong Wing-hung, welcomed the Observatory's initiative to provide real-time weather photos at Sai Wan Ho. "Eastern Victoria Harbour is one of the main waterways for vessels visiting Hong Kong. The newly added real-time weather photos provide useful reference for ships to assess weather conditions, thereby enhancing the navigation safety in these waters." he said.

The Acting Senior Superintendent of the Marine Police Regional Headquarters, Mr Cheung Mei-hon, said, "The real-time weather photos at Sai Wan Ho provide useful pictures for the public to know better the sea traffic, visibility and sea state in the vicinity of eastern Victoria Harbour."

With the addition of weather photos at Sai Wan Ho, the number of sites providing weather photos on the Observatory's website has increased to 20. The public can access the weather photos through the Observatory's "Regional Weather in Hong Kong" webpage (www.hko.gov.hk/wxinfo/ts/index_e_webcam.htm) and mobile platform webpage (m.hko.gov.hk/wxreport/wxphoto.htm). "MyObservatory", the smartphone weather service application, will also make available the real-time weather photos at Sai Wan Ho in its next upgrade.
