  • HKO sharing experience in disaster prevention and mitigation at an international cross-sector conference

  • Monday, 7th May 2018

Dr. Chong Sze-Ning, Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, shared the experience of Hong Kong in operating the weather warning signal systems and in disaster prevention and mitigation at an international cross-sector meteorological conference (InterMET Asia) held in Singapore in April 2018. The conference was co-organised by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and institutions in relation to meteorological technology or disaster risk assessment, with participants from meteorological departments and relevant industries around the world. The conference aimed at promoting the exchange of meteorological knowledge and technology among the industries and discussing the strategies of disaster prevention.

At the conference, Dr. Chong delivered a talk on how the Observatory and government departments in Hong Kong worked closely to respond to meteorological hazards. She also introduced how the Observatory disseminated information through various platforms and social media so that the public could obtain authoritative information from multiple channels. Some representatives from developing countries found that the experience of HKO was worth learning and could help them improve their disaster prevention plans and basic infrastructures.

During the conference, a forum was also held to enable attendees to discuss various topics such as the exchange of meteorological information, the impact of rapidly increasing amount of data, and the latest development of data application. Dr. Chong pointed out that the growing trend of weather information or computer forecasting products being spread on the internet had both pros and cons on disaster prevention and mitigation. She also reminded those who spread or forwarded the information should ensure its correctness. They should also be responsible for educating the public or users on how to make good use of the information.
