To help reduce vehicle emission and protect the environment, the Observatory has designated the third Thursday of each month as Car Free Day. On this day, all colleagues are encouraged to ditch the car and use public transport instead. Those who have to use a car on that day for whatever reasons can choose another suitable day in the same month as their car free day. This exercise was launched in January 2010 with the first Car Free Day fell on 21 January 2010. The exercise received good support from the staff and the Observatory carpark remained very much empty throughout the day.
