  • Assistant Director of the Observatory elected as new Vice-Chair of the Meteorology Sub-group of Asia Pacific Region of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)

At the 21st meeting of the Meteorology Sub-group (MET SG) of Asia Pacific (APAC) region of ICAO, Miss S.Y. Lau, Assistant Director of Aviation Weather Service of the Hong Kong Observatory, was elected to be the Vice-Chair of the Sub-group. This was the third time that a colleague of the Observatory held the Chairmanship/ Vice-Chairmanship of this group. Mr. Jun Ryuzaki of Japan was elected Chairman of the group.

“I am very delighted to take up the role of Vice-Chairman of MET SG,” said Miss Lau after being elected. “This is recognition of the contributions of Hong Kong, China to the development of meteorology in the region. This is a very challenging time for the aeronautical meteorological community with a number of transitions in the pipeline. I’ll work with the group to further advance the meteorological support to aviation.”

The main objectives of the MET SG of ICAO are to ensure the continuous and coherent development of meteorology in APAC, to facilitate the implementation of aeronautical meteorological services in the region, and to review and address deficiencies of the States. The Director of Hong Kong Observatory, Mr. C.M. Shun, served as Chairman from 2003 to 2009, and Dr. C.M. Cheng as co-Vice-Chairman from 2010 to 2015.
