Hong Kong Observatory collaborates with Hongkong Post to promote "Weather Phenomena" Special Stamps
26 March 2014
Hongkong Post held a press conference jointly with the Observatory today (25 March 2014) to promote a set of special stamps that focused for the first time on the theme of "Weather Phenomena". Mr. Nelvin Lee, Senior Manager (Philatelic Marketing) of Hongkong Post, introduced the design and sales arrangement of the stamp products and Ms. Sandy Song, Senior Scientific Officer of the Hong Kong Observatory, expounded on the weather phenomena featured on the stamps. The stamps will be released for sale by Hongkong Post on 27 March (Thursday) .The theme of "Weather Phenomena" adopted for the stamps is closely related to our daily life and is proving to be especially popular among the youngsters. A number of primary school students invited to attend the press conference were able to develop an interest in philately and understand more about the weather through a lively interaction with representatives of Hongkong Post and the Observatory, who responded with a generous sharing of knowledge and experience on various topics of interest raised by the students so as to facilitate a better appreciation of weather through the stamps.
To learn more about the changing weather, the "Weather Phenomena" special stamps highlight seven weather phenomena commonly observed in Hong Kong: rainbow, frost, clouds, lightning, fog, rain and typhoon. A special $20 stamp sheetlet issued by Hongkong Post is printed with lithography plus a lenticular effect showing the movement of Typhoon Vicente.
The Observatory has fully supported Hongkong Post in the issuance of "Weather Phenomena" Special Stamps. To facilitate the production process, the Observatory not only provided photos of various local weather phenomena for selection, but also information on such phenomena for Hongkong Post's reference. Ms. Sandy Song, Senior Scientific Officer of the Observatory, said that she was most pleased to be able to support the launch of the "Weather Phenomena" special stamps by Hongkong Post. It was a dream-come-true for "weather fans" who could now observe the weather through stamps, while at the same time a worthwhile effort in promoting a better understanding of the weather by members of the public.
To publicize and promote the issuance of "Weather Phenomena" Special Stamps, Mr. Shun Chi-ming, Director of the Hong Kong Observatory, and Mrs. Jessie Ting, Postmaster General, will jointly host an autograph session for members of the public during the Hong Kong Observatory Open Day .
