Joint Windshear Paper with Airline

The Observatory joined hands with the Northwest Airlines and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to prepare a paper on windshear detection. The paper will be presented at the 12th Conference on Aviation, Range and Aerospace Meteorology of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) to be held in January 2006. This is the first time the Observatory collaborated with an airline and the FAA to present a paper on aviation meteorology.

The paper covers the causes of windshear at airports and detection systems implemented around the world to tackle it. In particular, the paper includes an account of the history of the windshear alerting service in Hong Kong starting from the 1970s and highlights the latest enhancements made for the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) at Chek Lap Kok. It also mentions the joint venture being made between the Observatory and Northwest Airlines in uplinking HKIA windshear information to the cockpit.

The paper is accessible from the Observatory's website at: http://www.weather.gov.hk/publica/reprint/r612.pdf
